How has the new edition of NFPA 1851 changed requirements for Organizations & Independent Services Providers?
The 2008 edition requires that each manufacturer take a more active role in ensuring that Organizations & Independent Service Providers (ISPs) have had adequate training to properly perform Advanced Cleaning and Advance Inspection of that manufacturer’s products, as well as have the training to perform Basic Repairs and Advanced Garment Repairs in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements. |
Does Honeywell First Responder Products offer NFPA 1851 training?
Honeywell First Responder Products provides no-charge training, and most classes can be arranged at our Dayton facility or in the field. Any travel or lodging expense, however, is the Organization’s and/ or ISP’s responsibility. |
Is training available to all Organizations and ISPs?
Yes. If you own or service Honeywell First Responder Products products, training is available. However, we do reserve the right to withhold training from ISPs when we have concerns about process controls, marketing issues, staff stability, etc. We also reserve the right to withhold certification of individuals that failed to adequately complete course curricula per NFPA 1851 2008 edition requirements. |
How long is certification valid?
Until a new edition of NFPA 1851 issues (approximately 2013). |
Are there prerequisites for Basic Repair and Advanced Garment Repair?
Yes. We require some stitching experience for both Basic Repair and Advanced Garment Repair classes. And, per 2008 edition requirements, the Advanced Garment Repair approval can only be provided to Organizations or ISPs that have been verified by a third party laboratory for Advanced Garment Repairs. |
What is the difference between Basic and Advanced Garment repairs?
Basic Garment Repairs (non-verified) - Essentially minor repair i.e. snap replacement, patching of minor tears, repair of broken stitching, etc.
Advanced Garment repairs (requires verified status) – Essentially any other repair required. We will require ISPs seeking this approval from us to have verified status from a third party lab, and to allow two onsite audits from our staff (one announced and one unannounced) per 12-month period. |
Is verified status from a third party lab required for repair of helmets, boots, hoods, gloves, etc)?
Only garments has Advanced Repair distinction in the NFPA 1851 standard, so verification is only required for Organizations and ISPs that wish to do Advanced GARMENT repair. |
